99' E300 engine computer shot
Guys,
According to my mechanic, the computer on my car (part #0255455532) is apparently shot. It is not communicating with my vehicle, and has little communication with the diagnostic system my mechanic had (even after we replaced the SAMS chip). So far, we have only been able to source this part directly from Mercedes for new and remanufactured models. I have been quoted a total repair charge of $1,050 to repair it.
I have also been told that using a used CPU will not work with my car because the CPU's get "married" to the vehicle they are built with. Is that true?
Do I have any other options? What if I sent the CPU to Powerchip or someone else to get it remapped or looked at?

Unusual for the ECM's to go, but due to the security functions of the vehicle the computers to the best of my knowledge and belief are specific per vehicle.
What was the original issue/complaint?

My car's starter would engage, but no fuel was being pumped. Further, my alarm system was acting really weird when I had it towed. Even with my doors unlocked, and the alarm deactivated, the alarm would "go off" while it was on the bed of the tow truck. I had to disconnect my battery in order for it to stop.
We put the new ECM in and programmed it. The engine started right up.

Ed, are you sure about that part number? There are 5 different items using that number with an extra two digits after. The control unit, from what I can see, runs $1500 new and $800 re-manufactured.
