Question about miles driven and maintenance concerns.

I have had many cheap American company cars over the past 20 years that I would never have bought for myself. We drove them a lot of miles (40,000 year) barely maintained them properly, yet they drove forever without a problem.

I bought my E320 to drive on the weekends. I put about 4,000 miles on it a year. My service manager told me I should run it and run it much more. Told me low miles are a killer for cars. I told him I liked keeping the miles low for future re-sale, he smiled and said, there is NO RESALE anymore so start driving it!

What say you oh wise ones?

Your 02 E320 will be worth a little bit more with low mileage but not much. You'd be better off using it regularly instead of letting it sit for long periods of time. A 10-20 mile drive at least once a week would keep it healthy. You may as well drive and enjoy it unless of course you have nowhere to go :-)

I used to try to save mileage on mine...but

I do agree now that you should drive ANY car on a regular basis....It seems to to have more problems when a car just sit there for days or weeks not being driven. Not only that I drive mine HARD frequently...otherwise the car will get used to the LAZY mode...and not response as quickly when you really need it to.

I was going to save my 1990 300E W124 and keep it at low miles. However I missed driving it so 17 years go by and 242,000 miles later it still ran and looked new. That is until I got rear ended at a traffic light for about 8 grand worth of damage. I was paid $6K by the insurance and was told I would not have gotten any more even if less 50K miles. it was spotless. My 500E W124 passed my hands with 168K on it and still fetched over 22K when sold 4 years ago. It was the age and overall condition that set the high mark as well as other resales for those model years. I have 70K on my Brabus wagon and I enjoy when someone comes up and asks me what is it and compliments on a nice car. It would not get that being a garage queen. So, my friend, I agree drive it and enjoy your ownership. You might save a grand by not driving it but then the lazy repairs may erase that savings. Enjoy your dream. Let the next owner get his own I say.
