Groan/rumble sound from steering - 99 E320

Hello,

When I turn the steering wheel at slow speeds (e.g. while pulling into a parking spot) I hear a lot of groaning/rumbling sounds coming from the steering area. I say area because I can't pinpoint where the sound is coming from. I checked the steering fluid and it's right on the line on the dipstick. I don't hear the sound at higher speeds but maybe it's because I don't turn the steering wheel as much (left/right) while driving. I can hear it when I slow down to make a turn. Also, it doesn't matter if the engine is hot or cold.

Anyone know a fix for this or what might be causing it?

Thanks.

Do you live in a area with cold climate ? If yes this is a known issue with the steering wheel. Ask your dealer for a product called Lubrizol ( about $8 for the bottle). You will need to add this to your ps fluid.

Do a search on thos forum for 'Lubrizol' and you will get all the info. I know MB dealers in NY sell this.

I have the same issue but luckily the weather hasn't colled down enough in NC as of yet.

Cheers

I live in a suburb of Chicago and it is starting to get cold over here. But I've had this problem even in the summer when the temperature was in the 90's. Earlier I just chose to ignore it but the sound is starting to annoy me now.

Thanks.

Try the Lubrizol and change your ps fluid. Cheap fix that would potentially fix the issue.

OP, did you ever fix your issue? I'm having pretty much the exact same problem with my W211 2005 4matic...
