'00-'01 Taillights on '97E300...

Just installed the outer portion of the lights this morning and went to MB to order the innner decklid lenses. For those whom have already done this cosmetic alteration, there is an extra bolt that requires a nut on the inside of the lamp on the upper corner. Without a nut there is it still sealed properly so that it doesn't leak? The lenses I just removed had this crazy plastic tab with a serious looking bolt [compared to the other screws] that held the lamp in that same place.

I changed both the outer and inner lights on my 99 E300. The inner needed some plastic shaved off but the mounting hardware was identical between the old and new. I don't know if there is any difference between your 97 and a 99. Good luck

Wink

I made this change not too long ago. The outer lights were definitely a breeze, and the inners did required some modificaton! Somewhow, the left inner was seated much better than the right side.

The plastic nut set is for secuing the the inners to the trunk.

What are the differences between the two? Where can one go on the net to see the differences? Thanks.

Hey Guys,
Picked up the inner tail lights from MB earlier. By looking at the lights, what is there to trim off, as in previous posts other have said to make them fit you need to trim some plastic off? Included is a pic of the inner side of the lights. Please someone fill me in to what must be trimmed. I haven't looked at the lamp currently in there yet.

I had to shave down the corner where you see the three ridges. I took it down to where it was almost even. You might have to shave some plastic off the side opposite the connector. Invest in a Dremel tool with the sanding wheel bit, that way you can do a little and check the fit. Good luck

You will also need to cut some insulation at the opposite corner. Once you removed the original inners, compare the two, and you will see the difference.

Here she is... Completed!

Ok guys, I've included a couple of pix after my rear fascia lamp upgrade. I wish someone would have at least said tha after trimming that they would fit in like the original ones did. I wanted to keep trimming until they fit snug but realized that the lenses were getting paper thin in the spot requiring attention. I managed to trim the off enough to sit somewhat right ad then bolted them in ad it worked, so I left it at that. At least both side came out virtually identical in result. Enjoy...

The first pic includes a set of Xenon type bulbs. In person they bring out a sweet white output. Same bulbs for the blinkers as well, nice moochromatic thing going :-)

Any reason why you got yourself the red/clear taillights instead of the red/smoked ones?

Here are the last few pix I am posting for this thread. Took them an hour ago in the daytime this time. :-)

MBenzNL -
I choose the clear/red ones because I like the monochromatic look of the lights. I like how white lighting blends with my smoke silver, and the front lamps. Personal preference on that... Damn I need those Xenons. :-)

Jim -
When we doing these on your E?

-Chris

Fair enough...in some cars clear/red does look better then smoked/red. I have several sets of OEM (used and complete) Euro xenonlights...in case you really need those...

Hey michakaveli,

Nice motor man, we both need carlsson body kits ...

Question, did you have to replace the bulb sockets when upgrading your light? my old sockets don't fit correctly in the new rear lights that I have (the lights you have just installed).

cheers

Shiraz
