W210 dash light what am i doing wrong

I have a 1997 E 420 and the a/c and radio all work ( display ) when the Headlights are off but if you put them on it all goes out ( this is with the car running ) except the little red light lights is it me did i miss the bright up adjustment in the books ??????????? - you cant see any of it at night -- except the main dash head with speedo tach that the elunination works fine - jz

you wrote all all in one sentence so i may have misconstrued the meaning...but i'd suggest
checking the battery health, alternator/voltage regulator for proper and stable output

Sorry for the screw up

the a/c control and the radio does not light up when the HL switch is switched on - the digit display is on but its dark once the night comes - is their a combined bulb or are they lit individually ???????????

i hope i explained it corectly now - jz
