Push the mirror in its entirety to the door, and then pull out the metal clip with a flat screwdriver .
Then press the mirror glass a little bit , so you can pull the "hood '' off , you can replace the bulp now.
When you're done , do the opposite.

Ok, I have tried this but my mirror will not fold all the way back to the door. I dont want to push too hard and break it. Do I have the same mirror as you?

that's the same as on the 2000 E320 shown here. you *do* need a firm
hand....and a little body weight on it. much easier if you had two people
doing it but do-able with one. the spring is quite strong.
