Shock problem?

Shock problem?

I have a '01 320E AWD wagon with 138K original miles. The last 2 months I've been experiencing a real jolt anytime I hit any uneven edge on the road, not pot holes, just a shallow gouge can send a molar rattling vibration through the car. It seems to be mostly a front left issue but when you have loose change in the ashtray it sounds like an earthquake.

Is this typically a shock issue or are there other potential culprits. I'm trying to get through another 2K miles until my next servicing but my teeth might not make it.

Yep........sounds like swaybar bushings to me. Might as well change the end links too.

Is it difficult to remove the front end links off the sway bar?

pretty easy and quick on the regular sedans. not familiar with the 4-matics though.

Waiting is never a good idea. Just fix what's wrong, you don't need to do the oil change yet. Otherwise you may ruin a perfectly good set of tires and who knows what else.

There is probably a pictorial in the DIY section on one of these MB sites. Its not hard, I did mine, in about an hour or so. Just be careful to jack the car properly using the jack pads and USE GOOD JACK STANDS!!!

The wheels come off and the sway bar end links are just behind the brakes under the car. The main sway bar bushings are towards the middle of the big black sway bar. A few bolts hold it in place to the undercarriage which are the sway bar bushings and the end links have a few bolts too. If I remember the end links slid on to the end of the sway bar but dont hold me to that. Might take some muscle to install with the new bushings but its do-able. You'll notice a difference immediatly! The car turns more crisply and handles much flatter in a turn. Its all good.

like jeff mentioned, it's pretty straight forward once you take the wheel off and look at it. make sure you have a set of metric tools. also when you take the wheel off always place it under the car in case the jack/jack stands fail. with new links on i could tell the difference when driving in bad roads. no more that clunk sound.
