It seems that the post facelift models(2000-20030 tend to have more strange faults than their predecessors. I rarely see the tranny/suspension/lcd cluster/cd, bluetooth, nav, iPod electronic bug/rear window regulator/etc... issues with specifically late 98 and 99 models. did MB really just fall off the quality wagon? I have probably just jinxed myself and "Bessie" but I had to throw it out there...please be gentle on me?!

My 99 CLK didn't really have any electrical gremlins. My 2001 E55 does, let's just say. Although the pre-facelift had other issues, like cracking dashes.

So true! If it aint' broke...I just wonder if some of the 100+ cosmetic and electronic changes made to the facelift were too much? I mean you have a body that is released in 96' / gets a new motor in 98' / gets new electronics in 2000' and gets scrapped in 2003' ??? Not a long run for a vehicle with so many changes...Maybe the 3 year rule applied to 99'? or maybe i'm just biased. I always heard to buy a vehicle during or just after the 3rd year of production because "they" have worked out the bugs and every year after that is just fluff... Just quoting Dad.

Dad is always right, and it is true that MB had some quality struggles with the electronics on this car. Whether it was specifically after facelift, I don't know but I believe it was.

Dad is truly always right and how I wish he were still here. Oh my Papa... he was so wonderful....
The W210 series tanked MB as far as quality issues were concerned. That is the time when they fell to the very bottom of JD Power and assoc list I believe in 26 place. They did scramble to fix things with something like 1800 total changes or improvement from pre and post face lift cars but it was not until the release of the 211 that they really got back into the game. However stay clear of the 04's and get the 05 or 06. The 04s had many teething challenges although not as great as the 210. On with the wagons uber allas!!!

In 12 years and 240k+ miles on the '97, only unscheduled repairs have been 1 transmission at 107k, 2 water pumps, 1 MAF, 2 window regulators, a taillight, a blower regulator, a brake light switch, and LOTS of bulbs. Also not one spec of rust.

2000-2004 were the biggest problem years for MB quality.

only one MAF change in 12 years? that's pretty good. mine seems to last about 4-5 years only. my car is on it's 3rd maf (1st from original owner, 2nd and 3rd from me). mine has over 160k miles and i have changed transmission conductor plate + connector plug, blower regulator, 1 window regulator, resealed the timing cover, swaybar links, water pump at 130k miles, and a few bulbs. still drives like new.
