po410 code on 1999 e320 mercedes
I have a 1999 e320 mercedes benz that displayed PO 410code. It is in the shop and the mechanic tells me that he replaced the check valve on the passenger side because through his diagnostic, that was the problem. It was not the entire problem. Now he said that there is carbon build up under the check valve and the carbon build up is in the ports and that he is using a chemical solution to get the carbon out the ports. He has been doing this for two weeks and only a little bit of the carbon is breaking up.He said that it would be more than the car is worth to replace the heads of the car.
I am just asking because I am not a mechanic. Is there another solution to decarbon this 1999 e320 mercedes benz? He said that he cannot see down into the head so does not really know how effective the solution is working other than the little trinkle that comes out.Any help is much appreciated. The car ran smooth with the check engine light on, but I need to get the car to pass a smog test.

Are you sure your state still does testing for a 1999?
It is my understanding that with the secondary air pump not working bilaterally, and check engine light on, no harm is done to engine.
Hopefull you can re set it and get it checked before the light turns back on if smog testing is indicated. My code (same as you) was stored but did not trigger a CEL

Yes, I need the secondary air system to work in order to pass smog. The mechanic said the main problem is the build up of carbon under the pasenger side check valve and he is using a solution that he is using to break the carbon deposits down. he has been at it about two weeks now. I was wondering if anyone else knows anything else to make this process quicker.

Recently the code keeps coming back. Replaced egr and check valve, same problem. Verified pump works , cleaned egr pipes and still unsolved. Going replace all vacuum lines and see if that helps

The exhaust gas 'sampling ports/passages' are inside the cylinder heads and connect to the exhaust ports by small diameter passages---which often plug with 'carbon deposits' and block the flow of the secondary air into the exhaust ports to rapidly start the primary catalyst working. 'Drilling out' the heads with a speedometer cable often cleans the passages enough to keep the P410 code away.

the code clearing had not thing to do with what you put in the fuel. The sec air pump comes on at start up to inject added oxygen into the exhaust so that the cats fire up in under 2 minutes. The P0410 will return. At least until you fix the secondary air issue. Lucas will not do it. P0410 also has no affect on mpg.The air pump comes on for a few minutes when the engine is cold(you can hear it pumping along when the engine is at high idle on cold start and then it goes off.
The obd2 system checks it periodically for proper function.
Check vac lines to it.Disconnect the feed lines to the exhaust and spray with crc cleaner, check the check valve. It is not a circuit malfunction or anything that a fuel additive will repair.
In colder months the check valve will fill with moisture,The weather has warmed up and the code is gone,it will return when the weather gets cold.Cheap part, replace it before it damages the air pump, which ain't so cheap.
