E430 Max Speed

I understand the 1998 E430 has a max speed set at the factory.
Speedo shows 160mph but factory cuts you off way before 160.

What is the maximum speed that the car can be driven and what happens when you reach the limit?

130 MPH

Max speed is limited at 130 MPH. I tried it once, and I reached the Max 130 MPH at less than 5000 RPM! The Redline is at 6000 RPM.

Bad news to remove the rev limiter, imo. Just buy an E55.

I drove my 2000 E430 4matic 130 and of course it tached low--this is a Benz, remember. I was around 5000 rpm on I-80 in Nebraska. The pedal just ceases to do anything more, and kind of kicks back at you, feeling kind of spongey, like if you're in a 5-speed and try to floor it in 5th...

Never pay attention to the speedo. My 1979 6.9 only goes up to 80 mph on the speedo. It goes much faster, when it is running...

There is a related thread . My friend from Germany told me that 120-130mph is moderated speed for autobahn.

Angry Thanks for the info

Thanks for the feedback. Guess I won't be passing too many cars at 130mph.

Without the limiter, the max speed would be around 150 MPH. That's the number I saw in a French Auto magazine when they tested the E430: It's 230 KM/H.

Passed Like a Parked Car

Yeah, I know I recently passed a black car at 100mph late one night thinking it was a BMW. It latter caught up to me and challenged me to race. I ran it up to about the 130 mark and he passed me like a parked car. Best I could tell because it was so dark out was that is was a C-Class coupe maybe a year 2002. I was bummed needless to say, but hey! along it was a fellow MB driver it's kewl with me. Gotta love the MB family!

I am sure a stock E430 is much faster than the stock C-coupe, but don't know if the C-coupe was modded or not....

Question Upgrades?

So, what good are upgrades like exhaust, air box etc. if max speed is 130. Can the car be re-chipped or the limiter removed?

Angry Sucks

See what I mean smoked by a C-class. What the hell did I buy an 8-cylinder for if I get beat out by 6 banger? Guess I have to go old school and ripoff all that smog sh?? and find the limiter.

Hello guys - I have a 97 E420 Sport. I have taken it to the limit couple times which is 145mph. At 145mph I do get a kick back.

But 145mph for me.

My 96 E320 hits the limiter at 135 with a tail wind. kind of like stepping on a sponge.

The limiter can be removed but it can only be done by a tuner who reprograms the chip for about $1000.

OUCH! How did they get you? radar, laser? If you don't run a radar detector, you might want to start. For radar the Valentine One is the best one out there. Laser detectors are really just instant ticket notification.

bigtire,

I really had no idea where he (cop) came from. At that speed, I was very careful, checked out the rear mirror every 10 seconds for cops. His car is just white (not black and white as regular cob car). He told me he was following me for about 2 minutes and he was behind a big truck. I don't believe him, I guess he was hidding and parked somewhere when he saw me flying at that speed. Well, I have to drive gently now but as you know it's almost impossible with an 8 cylinders.

Oh, by the way, he didn't have a radar gun.

Revenge

Get revenge like I did today. I was in the outside (supposedly the high speed lane) and had a cop behind me. He really wanted to pass me I was doing 70 in a 65 and would not let him pass. He flashed me but I said hey! if I can't speed you can't either. Yeah, I know he could bust me but what the hell I had fun right.:o

APB,
The posted speed limit is 75. The ticket is about $200 = 100 Gallons of gas

MB-E430, Thanks for the revenge :p
