Hi. I have a 1999 E320. The tranny died on me about a month ago. I bought a remanned tranny and had an independent shop install it. They called me today and told me the tranny won't shift out of 1st gear... Is the tranny shot or was it installed wrong???

with that sparse a description, it's nearly impossible to provide a realistic answer. it will really require hands-on, instead of keyboard diagnosis.
push it back to your mechanic.

Here are a few I can come up with: They ordered the wrong transmission (V8 trannies have different ratios) and the computer is going into limp mode, they forgot to push the safety plug in on the rear of the tranny, they didn't reset the ECU properly, or the TCU has fluid in it

May be as simple as the retained trans codes wernt cleared first.

Repairing or replacing the trans wont resolve that. Must be cleared with SDS first. OBDII only "see's" the generic codes, not the propriatary ones.

FYI: SDS is the Star Diagnostic System that all the MB dealers use. Some of the bigger Indy MB specialists have them too.

Is it in first gear, or second gear? Limp mode is 2nd gear, first gear would probably indicate some other issue. You can figure the gear by seeing how fast the car will go, if nothing else.
