not shifting past first gear

My car ,2002 E320, wont shift past first gear!!! even when i put it into drive and try to shift manually, it only stays in "D". When i shift into reverse or drive, it bangs into gear. Oh yeah the check engine light came on and i haven't gotten a chance to check the code. this happened to me before and i shut off the engine, waited a few seconds and tried to start. It wouldnt start!!! i waited 3 minutes and it started right up and began to shift smoothly again. I need help! any ideas! i can use the help!! i just hit 105K miles, dont think the tranny fluid has been changed since i got it tho if it helps.

trans went into limp home mode//need to check the code/ possible have fliud intrustion into trans ecu, to check remove cover on ecu box on right side of engine, trans ecu has two connectors rectangular in shape pull connector off and see if any fluid is in there, will need to clean out ecu and connector and replace conductor sleeve
