Central Locking Flashing Red Light
Just noticed tonight that when my car is locked, the red light on the central locking button which is above the climate control panel on my 98 E320 is blinking, along with the red light on the radio. I always noticed the one on the radio, but why is the central locking red light now blinking?

It is to tell everyone that the cars alarm system is armed. It's armed automatically whenever you lock the doors. The light on the radio is to tell potential thieves that it is a coded radio and if they steal it it will be hard to get it working. You may also see a decal with the word CODE in the passenger windows. Sort of the auto equivalent of that 'ADT' sign in people's front yard.
BTW, you can test your alarm system by locking the car with one of the doors ajar (half closed) and then try to push it closed. At least that worked for me.
