That is the oil inspection port. It is a common place for oil to leak on a 3.2L V6. Under the small rectangular cover there is a rubber gasket. Just replace it. There are two bolts holding the cover on. The large center bolt (hex socket) does not need to be removed unless that's where the oil is coming out. There is an o-ring under that bolt.

About $4 at dealer. Easy to install. Good luck.

Thank you very much! I have the same leak on my 98 E320. One question, is it better to change the gasket during an oil change when there is no oil, or does it not matter? Thanks

I guess that would depend on just how bad it's leaking and how long to the next oil change. There is no pressure at the inspection port when the engine is off and the oil has drained back into the oil pan.

Good luck.

I did mine yesterday. It's a little tight because the bottom bolt is really close to the belt. You will have to push the belt down enough so you could get your socket in there. There would be little oil in there. I just put a rag by the pulley to catch it. Good luck.
