Transmission Service
Hello All,
I own a 2000 E430 with 98,000 miles. I was wondering if anyone here can give me any detail as to what is involved in a transmission service for my w210 E430. Is this something that MB service techs can only do? Or is it straight forward enough to be a DIY. If anyone here has DIY details on it, it would be much appreciated. Good day all.

Not hard if you have the right tools. Even if you have to buy a few tools it's still cheaper than the dealer. FYI, I would only use the correct MB fluid. Fluid, filter, pan gasket, drain plug seals and lock pin available from autohausaz.com and others online. You may or may not have the drain plug on the torque convertor since I believe 2000 was the transition year. If you only drain the pan and replace the filter you'll need about 4 liters of fluid. If you have a drain plug on the torque convertor you'll need about 8 liters
You will also need a 'dipstick tool' for final level measurement. Another tip: calibrate a gal milk bottle or similar (just mark side at 1 qt intervals) to measure how much you took out and then put the same amount back. Drive at least 30 min after refilling to heat the transmission to operating temp before making the final level adjustment. If you overfill don't drive car until you have drained some out. Dealers charge $200-300 labor and about 40% more for parts (over places like autohausaz).
Here is a link with more details although I don't personally agree with some of the opinions expressed. I do agree with the 'How to' part.

Good luck.

Thanks RichardM98. I just got a quote from my local MB Service Shop I normally go to. They quoted me $350.00 for the tranny service. Too much?

If it's an independent MB mechanic, maybe a little high. But if you use them regularly and are happy with past work then at least you'll be confident it was done right. If you're not going to be a DIYer then it's good to build a relationship with a mechanic you trust.
