Question Front brake caliper question

Was looking at the instructions to replace the brake pads here:

http://www.mercedesshop.com/e_class_brakejob.htm

Anyone know if I need to use pliers or the special brake tool to compress the piston in the front caliper? Or will a simple c-clamp work?

Thanks in advance...

For the front and rear brakes the C-clamp will work.

Sorry, rethinking this, it's to tight to get a C-clamp in there. I just pushed the pistons back with a small pry bar with the old pad still in there.

Hmmmm...okay, thanks. As long as I don't need to get that special caliper tool, I'll be okay.

no you don't really need a special tool. A flat head screw driver will do it.

I usually use a piece of small wood, and a C-clamp to push the caliper when installing new pads.

Completed front and rear in 2 hours (first time) no problems or tricks. No special tools needed and I used the info from the link you posted. I used a pair of large channel lock pliers to compress the piston into the caliper.

My guess is that to change the rotors, you'll have to completely remove the caliper and the caliper carrier. The rotor should then just pop right off. Haven't done it myself, though, so I can't say how difficult/easy it is...

You mean to free the rotor from the hub? I don't think so -- my understanding is that the rotor is a free-floating design. So once you take the caliper and the carrier off, it should come right off...you may actually be able to work the rotor free with the carrier still attached. I don't know, but if you can wait until Thursday, I'll find out (a friend is helping me change the front pads).

The rear rotors are probably another story, you probably will have to remove the carrier in order for the rotor to pop free.
