There was a guy from another forum that showed me this link. He did the ribbon change, it works, I have mine on order and will change mine out soon.

That tells you what the problem is and how it happens. I'm wondering why all these Euro cars had this problem and all of a sudden it doesn't happen now on the newer ones.

It sucks to say but yes it does happen to newer ones too. Companies make things to work but not forever. That's how they keep getting our money. I have seen a post on another board

From what I read, they only fix the pixels on the outside temperature and the clock, but the odometer isn't part of the cable set.

I was able to fix my clock with the buisness card trick (pressure) but no success with the clock.
Keep us posted...
thanks!

I wear a watch and I don't care how hot it is outside, as long as the A/C works.
It's the odometer I'm having trouble seeing and I still haven't found a trip meter (which I don't know how to set anyway).

I'm on my third instrument cluster!
The instrument cluster on my E320 suffered from pixel loss every three to four years. Car was acquired new in 2002, had its first instrument cluster replaced in 2006 and then recently had the second instrument cluster replaced in late 2009. The car is now on the third instrument cluster and I anticipate it will need replacement in 2013/2014.
It is a bit of a nuisance, but I'm just glad to say that overall, this car is still fairly reliable. Knock on wood.

Well, I ordered the ribbon kit from pixelfix for my 2001 E430 and it arrived within a week. I finally got some time today to pull my guage cluster and see if its as simple to fix as they say!
The instructions are pretty good - if a little vague in places but to be honest it becomes pretty obvious as you get into the unit. Pay particular attention to cleaning off the old residue on the contacts after removing the old ribbons. I used a little cellulose thinners on a Q-tip. Its also worth packing the silicone pressure strips out with little strips of card as suggested in the instructions.
Anyway to cut a long story short it went really well and 45 minutes later I have this........

Im pretty stoked as both my outside temp and gear ind/clock have not been readable since I bought the car - now theyre A1.
While it was out I took the opportunity to throw in some chrome guage rings - nice and simple being just a snap fit!
So I can totally recommend the pixelfix kit!!

I tried th foam and pressure techniques with limited success. I'd like to do the new ribbon cables. Are there any special tricks or special, touchy disassembly procedures that I need to know about?
Thanks
Thanks
