remote key

hey everyone thanks for having me on. my name is dave and im from chicago and a huge fan of mercedes benz. i own a 1998 e 320 and have a problem with the key, i only have one and changed the battery. last saturday i went to a buddys parked the car and pressed the remote to lock ot and it didnt, so i deceted to hang out for a little and when i came back out i couldnt get the key to click over to start, battery fom the car seems good,,,hmmm can it be the ignition?? or the key?? the key actually started working like the battery was dying but changed that and the red light is the same with the new batteries, i can open,close, open the trunk or press the panic button. i hear a new iginition is about 1000 with labor. if anyone can help i would be greatful.

"....battery fom the car seems good...." what makes you believe that the
battery is good? I would suggest that you verify that it is full strength
before you eliminate this as a contributing factor.

The battery in the key is used to send the RF signal to lock/unlock the doors. It is not used to start the car. So if you're having trouble starting the car, it's not your key battery. I would check the car battery and then try to isolate exactly what issues you are having.

thanks saintz. like the 55. almost got one. i going to check again but the car might be locked with the stearing wheel wich could be the ignition.

try to spray some dustoff inside the key.Take the battery out and go to work i had the same problem with my key you can still start the car with out the batterys insidetry it worked for me beats paying like $300.00 for a new key mine got wet It's the key not the ignition I did get a new one and my car stop doinig it i thought it was the ignition too.

Are you saying ...

that you only have one remote key? My '97 came with a valet key, a non-remote key and the two remotes. I would suggest undoing the battery ground cable for 15 minutes or so and then trying again. I do know that key technology changed in '98 for the E cars. Consult your owner's manual for key options.
