Vibration in the steering wheel

I own a 1997 E320. My steering wheel vibrates at 50 to 60 mph. The vibration starts at 50 mph and then stops at 60mph. The tires have been balanced and aligned, that helped but the vibration is still there slightly. Does anyone know what may cause this problem or know of a website to point me to that may have something to help find this problem?

Have your lower control arm bushings checked, I bet they're torn.

double check your tire pressure as well (front and rear). Even a few pounds difference in pressure can make this happen.

same problem as well.

Checked the bushings those are fine, I thought I was being picky when I took my car into the dealership for this exact problem.

They could not find anything wrong as well.

It only happens when i approach 55mph / 60mph, and then its gone after i exceed 65mph.

vibration f/u

you didn't say what type of wheels you had....

i used to have a 1993 600 SL w/ the same problem. the previous owner put on some 18" OZ's that looked great, but despite 4 different attempts to get the darn thing balanced and aligned, i could not get rid of the vibration. after i sold the car, somebody told me that the OZ's offset were different than the AMG 18's and that was the reason why it would NEVER be right. i don't have an answer for you...just sympathizing w/ your situation as i've been thru it.

Hey,

Thanks for all the help. I had the bushings checked at the Mercedes place and a suspension shop, they both reported no problems with the bushings or suspension. Took the car in to get another alignment and that seems to have gotten rid of 90% of the vibration. There is still a tiny bit of vibration but not enough to stress over.

I have the exact same issue.. Dun bother me because I dun travel within that range but still annoying. I remember I spoke to LightMan and by warrany for some reason he had his engine mounts replaced and since then he hasn't had the vibration.... That was on a '99 E300 and my '97 E300 has the vibration too. It's not the tires...

You need to demand dynamic balancing, which a lot of shops are too lazy to do. Dynamic balance with get rid of vibration up and down AND side to side.
If they don't know or understand what you are asking for, move on. That's what got rid of the vibration for me.
