Serpentine belt tensioner E200 (w210)

Hi

I need to replace the water pump on my Mercedes E-Class (W210) E200 (210.035) 1998cc - Year 1998 - Engine Code M111.942.

Does anybody have instructions on how to release / adjust the serpentine belt & tensioner ?.

Thanks

Jason

Hi Jason -

There are two styles and some cars had the old one and have been updated. On my 98 it is as follows -

Use the diagram in your owners manual to determine the position of the tensioner if necessary. Feel around below the tensioner at about the 7 o'clock position for a hex nut. I believe it is 17mm. Put a wrench on it and turn it counter-clockwise to rotate the tensioner and then remove the belt. If you don't have a manual, you might want to take a picture of the belt before removing for reference when reinstalling. Although some cars have a diagram of the belt routing on the radiator support.

I believe the old style had some sort of mini shock absorber as part of the tensioning system. I'm not sure how it is released but I think it might be via a torx bit the center.
