Another clicking noise problem

I just received a 1999 E300TD from my Aunt, but there's one thing that bothers the crap outta me! When driving sometimes there will be this clicking noise that seems to come from the shifter knob. When I hold the shifter to the right (towards the "D" a couple cm) when I hear the noise it diminishes greatly, but I can "feel" it clicking in the hand that's holding the shifter.

Anyone know what could be causing it?

Also check out my other thread about the driver seat!

How are the shifter brushing? A missing shifter bashing at the shifter end can cause a rattle in that area

I'm new to cars in general so bear with me here, but I did a quick search on shifter brushings and a couple questions I have are: what exactly do they do? are they inexpensive (and relatively easy) to replace? Also when you said bashing did you mean brushing?

I have some friends who know a lot about cars so maybe we'll take a look under the console tonight.

I meant bashing, sorry I have a issue with hitting random keys when I type. They are cheap and pretty easy to replace.

The bushings and the shifter linkage are both relatively inexpensive. They are fairly easy to replace, but the shifter linkage I believe requires dropping the transmission oil pan, which means having to replace the oil (about $50 worth). And pretty sure that he meant "bushing."
