Engine fan noise

My 2001 E-430 fan is extremely loud when it is in park and idling. Even when in a praking garage out of direct heat. It is very loud and almost sounds like you are standing on the gas, but the RPM's are still normal. I also noticed that only one of the fans is running , should they both be running?

What is your radiator temperature? If it's significantly higher than 80 degrees (hovering at the 100 degrees mark) then the fan does come on quite loudly. This is normal during the hot summers in Texas.

As for the one fan engaging as opposed to two fans, I really don't know if one or both fans operate simultaneously.

My '96 E300D has some sort of coupling that turns both fans, even though I don't think but one has a motor. I can turn one of mine by hand and the other turns too. I don't know if the 430 is set up the same way, but you might check and see if both have a motor (wired in).

If one fan turns then both should turn. One has a motor the other is driven off a belt. They are noisey but they shouldn't run unless you are over 100degC.
