Won't shift back to Reverse or Park/Stuck in 1st gear
#26
Went to move my '01 SLK 320 4matic from the driveway and these problems happened:
* When I turn the key, it takes a few seconds before it fires up
* Once I shift the gear lever pass Neutral, into drive, it won't shift back up to Reverse, neutral or Park unless I turn the car off.
* Have to turn the key in 0 position (engine off) for it to go back into Reverse or Park.
* When I put it in drive, it's stuck in 1st gear. When I try to use the +/-, it won't display any gear (blank display).
* Check Engine light on
* When I turn the key, it takes a few seconds before it fires up.
Any ideas what could be the problem? Any info would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

This is a repeat of another post today------first, your cel went on because the transmission module(TCM) sent the ECU a generic P07XX fault message which alerts you to a transmission problem, however the definition of the TCM fault, which is the real problem, CAN NOT be read by your weekend OBD reader you need factory or equal diagnostic software to learn the cause of the fault----yes it will cost some money!!
Follow the fault to solve your problem!!

I had this problem, but I did not have the starting problem. I replaced the electric floor shifter last winter and it has been fine since. The generic OBDII code on my car was P0705, but this can be more than 1 Mercedes proprietary diagnostic code. you can go to a good independent MB shop or the MB dealers to have the codes read on your car. I was in limp home mode and able to move the floor shifter from D to N with no problem, and I discovered that I could move the lever to R then P if I took my foot off the brake pedal. SET THE PARKING BRAKE FIRST.

Same issue + no start up
[QUOTE=LIONHEAD;4164381]Went to move my '01 E320 4matic from the driveway this afternoon and these problems happened:
* Once I shift the gear lever pass Neutral, it won't shift back up to Reverse or Park. Stuck at Neutral at the highest position. Have to turn the key in 0 position (engine off) for it to go back into Reverse or Park.
* Drove it around the neighborhood and it's stuck in 1st gear. When I try to use the +/-, it won't display any gear (blank display).
* Check Engine light on
* When I turn the key, it takes a few seconds before it fires up.*****
I HAVE THIS SAME EXACT ISSUE PLUS THE CAR WONT START. PLEASE HELP!! We unplugged the windows and trunk and 'esp' buttons to try to get the shifter OUT but couldn't get it out so we plugged everything back up and now she won't start. You can hear a click when you turn over but no rev what so ever. I have no clue what to even do from here.

Same issue
Have you gotten any info on this? I have an 01 e320 with the same issue. We spilt ice cream on the shifter but it worked fine for months after that then finally give her a full detail and I guess some of the cleaning solution got in the shifter and now is stuck neutral/ drive won't go out of first gear and to top it all off now won't start.

I had a similar problem with the same symptoms it ended up being the gear selector had died. After replacing it everything worked perfectly. The codes where misleading as they pointed to a bad valve body. A local specialist tested the selector and found that was the worn part.
