No, the 97E420 CD changer will not work on your 01E320. From 1999-2002, the E class CD changer use fiber optic to connect to the head unit. The older 96-98 use copper wires. CD changer from 1999-2002 will works. Regards.

2001 E320 - RIP
x2 SoCal208..... does your car have one already? is it wired for it? ....here's one on sale from a 2000 s500...ask the seller if it has the fiber connection (make sure it is D2B and not MOST!) ..... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Merce...item255c2107d1 ... if you want, (and you are good with soldering, etc. - it needs repair/replacement of the ribbon cable), i'll sell you mine for $100 (including: cartridge, bracket, and MB dust lid) plus shipping/insurance ...... good luck!

My car already had one (model # MC3010) since I bought the car @ Fletcher Jones In Newport Beach, CA 10 years ago.

I've had nothing but trouble with the CD changers. You might look at an iPod adapter such as the Dension unit. It will outlast any CD changer you buy.

I noticed many Mercedes had failed CD changers. Whats wrong with them? Why are they going out?

Many design problems. CD changers in general aren't very reliable. Add in the cartridge, and you have more problems. The lasers are old technology and were not very reliable then. Also you're using fiber optics (on the newer models), which are prone to breakage and bring a whole additional set of issues. And there appear to be some electronics issues as well (I've seen some sort of incorrect soldering that caused a ground short).

Going with an iPod adapter such as the Dension cuts out most of the issues, except the fiber optics issues.
