1997 e420 catayltic converters

i was looking around the forum and didnt find an answer to my question so i guess i have to make a new thread. so my cats have been rattling on and off for the past 2 years or so. i live in california bdw. i just wanted to know if its ok to take the whole catalytic converter assembly off the car, then let any loose pieces that are rattling fall out and then out the while assembly back on? once i do this will it light up the CEL or cause any power loss problems or increased emmisions? i dont want to gut them or make any holes in them, i just want the small loose pieces out so that they dont rattle anymore. i went to a muffler shop and they are asking 600 to replace each cat (there are 4 on my car). thats a pretty high price, especially because im trying to sell this car.. is anyone here from the san francisco bay area, east bay to be exact? id really appriciate it if somebody told me a good shop that replaces or rebuilds cats..
