First time MB buyer looking at '01 E320 wagon. Advice? I have

seen photos of a car with 120,000 miles on it but I have not seen the car in person. From what I can tell it looks very clean but looks to have some rust in the rear window frame near the wiper.

What should I expect in terms of upcoming maintenance issues? I have heard that I should expect to replace ignition coils shortly. Is that so? Are there potential problem areas I should focus on when I go see the car?

Thank you for any advice

Replacing the rear liftgate is a big hassle. There are many cars out there that are rust free. Advice is keep searching. If there is rust visible then there is probably rust in less visible places like the front spring perches. That can be a real danger and have been known to give out. Check the forum here for the threads.

Replace auto trans filter and fluid at 80-100k and plugs at 100k. Check service history. Look at oil, etc. Take a friend who is a qualified knowledgable service person with you or go to an indy for a good once over. Pay them for their time it will be money well invested.

I have 80K on my 01 E wagon, I would definately look under the doors, I had bad rusting there and MB split the cost. I also have a small spot under the wiper arm. Other than a window regulator, a minor AC hose leak, sticky wheel buttons it has been a good car for the last 10 years, origional plugs and brakes, oil and filters, trans drain at 50K.

The sticky covering on the wheel buttons can be rubbed off by hand. It is a clear rubberized covering for grip. All the details and little images remain once removed. Scratch it off gently by finger nail.

Thank you everybody for your input. I will at least take a look at it and if it

looks to be in good shape bring it to somebody that knows.

Very good information on replacing the door. I would have expected that to be some bolts at a hinge, an electrical connector and air shock but it sounds like a lot more.
