self-leveling operation
Can someone explain how the system in my 01 4matic wagon works? I mean when it is triggered (MPH, weight)? Is it pneumatic or air? Any other critical information would also be great! Thanks.

Pneumatic is air and it is not used. It is fluid filled and pumped through your power steering pump which is a two part pump on those cars w/ self leveling rear suspension. The rear are not shocks but dampners made by Sachs. There is an adjustment arm for lowering the adjustment point on the rear suspension and is marked (S) for the sport mode if an AMG car with lowered suspension. This hole must be used if you are lowering your car equipped with the self leveling rear suspension. The drop cannot be more than 1.5 inches or you risk bottoming out the rear dampner piston rod in the casing.

It works by adjusting the ride to a level position with the road when you add a load to the rear that would cause a deflection in ride height in the rear. It does not lower the the car at highway speeds as it only affects the rear suspension height not the front and works off the power steering pump.
