Anyone Drive a 98-99 E300 TurboDiesel??

I've got a 99 with 32k miles on it. Just wondering how loud the diesel knock-knock is on anyone elses, and if its sometimes intermittent when first starting or cold. Also curious generally how anyone's maintained the diesel engine differently than a gas engine - oil change intervals, services, etc.. Thanks, let me know,
first time diesel owner!

I see no one responded to your question from months ago. I'd like to pose the question to you, now that it appears you've had your turbodiesel for many months.

I'm very interested in getting a 98/99 E300TD, but as you must know they're hard to find and rare (particularly when you live in the flatlands of the Dakotas!). Anyway, I'd be very curious and appreciative of any and all comments you have about your diesel. Reliability, driveability, cold weather behavior, comfort, quietness, etc, etc. I'll read all the info you give, as such information is so hard to come by. Last year I test drove a 97 E300D; I was disappointed by the power and by the MB Tex interior and few options and was surprised by the dirty interior the Fargo MB dealer kept it in on it's lot. I've heard the engine/transmission upgrade did wonders. Again, any and all info is appreciated. Any by the way, what options did you find on yours? Thanks so much in advance!

I've had 2 TDI Beetle's, a 99 and a '00. I sold the last one to get something more luxurious (an Audi allroad--too bad it didn't come to the US with the TDI from Germany!). Both had terrible problems with the EGR (exhaust/emission recirculation) gunking and causing starting and driving problems. I've heard the E300TD has a better system to manage this that doesn't cause problems despite the gunky diesel sold here in the states.
