Ashtray removal

Sorry if covered previously. I looked, and could not locate instructions for:
Removing Ashtray Base in 99 E320. Obvioulsy, tray comes out, but I would like to remove the Door, Cigar Lighter plug, etc.
I plan to mount a Garmin StreetMapIII in place of the ashtray. Dimensions are about right, and might even allow closing the ashtray cover.
After removng radio and lower storage compartment, I am stumped.

Thanks for any assistance!!
Dave

I've been considering navigation options for months. This is a new one.

I'd be interested in hearing about your install experience and, if possible, seeking pictures. Be sure to follow up....

Thanks in advance.

Good luck.

You're attacking it from the wrong direction. You first remove the black plastic square ring that is around the shifter. You then lift up on the wood shifter console and expose the two screws that are holding down the ashtray compartment. That should get you where you can start the install. Good luck.

Must I take the same steps to remove the folding DIN sized pocket right above the ash tray?

Take ashtray out first!

Once the ashtray is out, the removal of the DIN-sized compartment is a snap (almost literally).

There is a tab on the upper side of the compartment that you press to release the plastic body. It will come right out. But you need to reach around behind it to feel the tab. Having the ashtray out makes this possible.

I installed a Pioneer NAV syatem last summer. Works great, but now I want the fully integrated features of COMAND. I'll be installing soon (I hope).

Godd luck guys!
