2002 E320 engine noise

When car is cold there is a ticking noise from L/Hand side of engine. Noise goes away when engine is at operating temp.. anyone has any suggestion, oil is change at 5000. miles interval Mobil 1 ( 10w 40 )

Hello and Welcome to the forum -

I believe what you are hearing is the MOT valve. It's a solenoid valve which bleeds excess fuel back to the fuel tank. It's just behind the windshield washer tank and usually has the letters 'MOT' on the top. Sound is normal.

Thanks Richard98, I am aware of that solenoid valve. Noise is coming from inside L/Hand valve the cover....

Could be a valve lifter (valve tap) these are hydraulic. I noticed 10W-40 wich is semi-synthetic. Isn't there supposed to be fully synthetic 5W-40 or 0W-40 in your engine?

Hi Lancelot,

I am using Mobil 1, 10W-40 which is Fully Synthetic... I thing u r correct when u suggested a valve lifter

I would change oil viscosity to 0W-40. Pumps up faster at start. My 2002 E320 ran strong for 155K with Mobil 1 0W-40 on your 5K oil change cycle for 8 years before I sold it. Never any oil-related issues.
