2000 E430, shift stuck in PARK! HELP!

The wife has a 2000 E430, and last night it was stuck in PARK - Could not move shift in to any gear or out of park. Thank god for GOOGLE, we found out to stick a screw driver in the hole of the shifter where the gear letters are (P, R, N, D) - to move the little locking bar which allows the gear shift to move without pressing the brake, and we were able to drive the car home. (NO TOWING)

Now I need to fix this problem. I'm not sure if something broke IN THE SHIFTER or not... How can I test - and most importantly HOW DO I FIX IT.

Thanks.

Probably is the brake light switch.
The part costs about 30.00$ + 15 minutes to change.
My wife was stuck in park at the supermarket last year.
We changed the brake light switch in the parking lot and everything is fine since.
Did your BAS EBS light in the dash?

YEP! They sure did (she said anyway), and it was AT THE SUPERMARKET... funny how that works out. LOL. She saw the lights, put it in park - while in front of the door's to the store, powered off the car, powered it back on - no lights, no shifting, no nothing. I got the frantic "I'm stuck at the store" call... and well, a screw driver and google post later, we got the car home.
