Thumbs up Can 2000 & up AMG E55 Steering wheel fit on 97 E420 w/airbag?

Hi All,

I am getting a 2000 E55 steering wheel for my 97 E420, I am sure it will fit , but can I use my stock airbag or I need to get one from dealer for a 2000 airbag ? Thanks

Yes, the steering wheel will fit fine, but you will need a new airbag. The airbag will have the buttons for control of the stereo/cluster/etc.

Naturally, the buttons will not work unless you also replace parts in the steering column and some wiring which goes to a MY2000 cluster.

I am planning to work with Steve tomorrow on such an upgrade!

You're welcome. I believe Steve is working on a deal for more airbags, so after he is back home you may want to get on his list for these airbags! They'll definitely be cheaper than the dealer. Last time I checked, the plain plastic airbag for W210 was $600 at the dealer! Whoa. My dealer might be a bit high-priced though, so you should check your sources to verify that Steve has a good price (I know he does... but it's always good proof).

It`s no problem, the steering wheel will fit, without any problem! It`s a little bit of work but it will fit! Do you have the new key, the Electroical Start System (not the old metal key)?

Chris

P.S. Sorry for my english

While we are on the subject...

When upgrading the steering wheel to a multifunction airbag and a 2000+ cluster what extra wires need to be added to the cables in the back of the cluster.

Let us know what wires in the cables going to the back of the cluster go to the buttons in the steering wheel. It looks like wires 14 - 17 are open on the left socket of a 96 - 99 but are filled on the 2000+ with the same color wires as on the contact ring behind the steering wheel.

What about the shift position display next to the clock readout. How does that get it's input to display a P or a D ....? Just plugging the 2000+ display in makes a solid box appear instead of a letter.

You need two things to make that work.

1) Touch shifter

2) Appropriate transmision computer

The touch shifter communicates over CANBUS to the cluster so it will indicate the selected gear. I believe the transmission computer also does so to indicate a touchshift gear change.

When u have a modell before 06/88 the transmission thing won`t work, cuz they`ve changed the software in the 2000+ Modells!

Hopefully you mean 06/99.

And yes, it will work if you update the modules, as indicated in the previous message.

If you like Touchshift ... then it might be worth it. Also, the newer transmission programming might be superior.

At one time, all of my cars had Touchshift except for one... so I was used to it, so I wanted it really bad on that one car that didn't have it. Thus went the quest to install Touchshift...

Touch Shift

Can you upgrade the 4 speed transmission on a 96 to touchshift by changing the modules?

No, the transmission is hydraulically controlled. The 5-speed transmissions are electronically controlled.

However, you can change the transmission, and a WHOLE BUNCH OF OTHER PARTS. For that much money, you could trade your car in on a newer one and save.
