Switching Ignition switch from flip to newer key..

Hello my fellow Benzers!

I have some issues with my w210 e290TD, the "mothercard?" loses its memory causing it to not start, (imobilliser? the red and green led flashing in rear mirror) that´s atleast what they told me at the MB service.
I was also told that the part (engine computer) couldnt be installed from another car, it had to be orderd from mb and it is expensive as h*ll...
this because the imobiliser and key and this computer is married with eachother.
i found a used car with smached body, but working engine, planning on installing the:
a)ignition switch
b)imobiliser box
c)kombi instrument (the mb service said it would be nessecery)
d) engine computer.
I figured, if it all has to be together, i will take all from a working car!
my question is.... Will this work?
I also have another problem...
The key in my mb now is the old flip-out style key, but the other one i have, and want to install, is a newer model, i think its called smart? its like plastic and no metal key is needed in the ignition switch lock. is it possible to install this? even if i now have the old key, and want to install the new key ignition switch.

both cars are -97, only differance is the ignition switch key.

hoping someone has any ideas, thx, Mar

It might work if the donor car is also a 290TD.
The biggest problem will be the wiring. I have no idea if you can 'ignore/bypass' any of the old infrared immobilizer system wiring. The new electronic steering lock requires different wiring, I fear you'll have to remove half the car's dashboard! Then there could be a slightly different wiring harness going to the engine! Even with new ECU's you never know how things are spliced into the car. Move over as much wiring between components as you can...

You'll need to replace;

-Electronic Ignition Switch plus key(s)
-Electronic steering lock
-Engine ECU
-Transmission ECU (when automatic)

Anyway I fear you'll need specialist help on this project...

If you get it working, beware you can only order new keys based on the VIN of the donor car!
