From are threads I have read regarding K40 Relay I pulled mine and it looks slightly different from the other pictures shown. Vehicle is a 1996 E300D.

Was pulled because have issues starting vehicle. After trying to start (with no success just fly wheel cranking), the rear view mirror flashes green/red alternating.

 

If you have crank the relay is Ok. when flashes the lights in the rear view mirror you have an inmovilizer locked, this is why the car doesnt start. try turning ignition to possition 1 and press / hold the "lock/unlock" button of the key by a few seconds, remove the key of the switch. close/open the car & try to start again

Thanks. Got the red/green alternating to stop but car still won't start.

 

Well i have not experience in Diesel cars (any diesel benz here :S) but hope you find the solution my friend, check for crank position sensor & check for diesel pressure/pump start

my 1996 e 300d would not start intermitently and shut off occassionally driving red and green antitheft light would flash. Also speedometer would rarely work with abs and ETS light on. Shop could not diagnose I read about K40 relay problem on forum. Replaced K 40 relay and all problems are resolved

 

Where did you pull the pictured module? The K40 is underhood on passanger side rear. It is the first module in the control module box.

Who ever said the K40 will solve your problem --works on bicycles not cars!!
