Question Brake Lining Sensor(s)

On my '99 I have about 42K miles. The "brake lining" warning appeared on my dash after a 400 mile trip. I searched this site for "brake warning" and "brake lining" and I got a few hits. Seems that a survey went out and brake pad/lining varied. I am the second owner and it seems that the previous driver had a heavy foot.

I just pulled all four wheels and the front pads are pretty thin, the rears look pretty good.

1. How many lining sensors are there? I count only two on the front calipers.

2. When the sensors are replaced at the same time the pads are, does the "brake lining" warning automatically reset? Or do you have to manually reset the FSS display?

3. Also, how thin does the pad have to be to set off the warning? I did not take mine apart, I only inspected the pads. The fronts are definitely worn to 50% or less thickness. The rears are worn down about 20%.

Thanks,

Rob Lee

I just found a picture of a sensor, the only way to see if the sensor is shorting to the rotor is to remove the pads.

Also, the partsamerica.com site lists one sensor for each wheel. I couldn't see the rear sensor locations. Can someone help here?

Thanks,

Rob Lee

Yes, the sensor works on the basis that when it "connects" with the rotor, the light comes up. Usually you have about 100 miles before it starts to wear on the sensor itself.

Each corner of the car has a sensor. I beleive the sensor itself is fairly cheap. 8-12$ each. Yes, the rear has them too.

You do not have to reset the computer.
