starting problem - sputters
1998 E320 wagon - Over a few weeks, have noticed the engine running rough at idle, like a plug misfiring. Car runs fine and smooth at normal RPM. Past couple of start ups, it hasn't started right up, but has skipped and coughed some. Acts like an auto choke on a regular engine when you have to pump the gas to get it started. After starting, it runs up to 1100-1200RPM and then settles down to normal after getting warmed up. Car has 160K miles, I don't know if plugs have been replaced ever. Curious if anyone has a cure. ? Fuel pump? Choke? Plugs? Maybe fuel filter?

Do you have a way to read the diagnostic trouble codes? That's the best way to start. On my car the recommended intervals are 5 years/100,000 miles on the plugs and 60,000 on the fuel filter.

read codes
I'd have to take it to a shop, but there aren't any warning indicators up on the display. What about an MAS sensor? A friend had similar trouble, cleaning that solved the problem. I'm not familiar with that sensor. Anyone else?
