'97 e320 (m104) oil filter wrench/socket?

Where can I obtain an oil filter wrench/socket for the m104 engine in my '97 e320? Called a few local auto parts stores (kragen, autozone, etc) and all stated they don't carry such an item, but I'm not so sure they understood what I was talking about. Called local dealer, who said that they do not carry the part and I should try MAC or Snap-On.

Later did a search online and they appear to be available for $15-30 from various sources. However, I would really like to change the oil tomorrow if at all possible, or Sunday at the latest.

Other than online, is there any other place what I can purchase one of these things?

BTW, the correct filter socket is 74mm 14pt, right?

Thx all...

raj, autozone sells a socket that fits your oil filter cap. i can't remember exactly on top of my head if it's 73, 74,75 or 76mm socket, but i know they have it because that's where i bought mine years ago, and again this summer after i lost the first one. just go there and grab 3-4 different sockets that look similar size to your oil filter cap and try them one by one to see which one fits. they are black in color and good quality. i will try to remember tomorrow morning and check what size is the one i have.

Thanks, will try AZ tomorrow after work. I had one for several years as well, but haven't been able to find it since moving...and couldn't remember where I had originally bought it.

Smile e 320 1997 OIL FILTER WRENCH

Hello,

I started on Sunday the adventure of changing the oil in my 1997 E 320 gasoline sedan W210 engine m104.

Tonight is Monday and I just replaced the oil filter.

The biggest problem I had was with finding a way to unscrew the hard tighten cap on the filter oil.

Now, unless your cap was not closed right in the first place, I don't think there is anyway you can unscrew it by hand unless you have a metal hand with 14 flutes.

After long research and multiple visits to stores (with returns included), I will finally reveal to the public what works on this engine:

76 mm 14 flutes in metal.

Nothing else works thatI tried.

The good news is that you can EASILY find it at Advanced Auto Parts for around 5-6 dollars.

You then need a 3/8 wrench but that you might already have or you can buy at the store once you find the cap.

No need to spend 19 or 36 dollars for the oil filter wrench.

The brand of the oil filter wrench (the 76 mm) is Performance Parts.

The M104 is 76 mm not 74, or 74.5. Don't get the 74/76 one, it also does not work.

Good luck, the store might not have it in stock but just go to the nearest other one and likely they have it.

I found a 75mm 14 flute oil filter cap wrench at O'Reilly auto parts that works perfectly for all 3 of my cars (2000 C230k, 2006 R350, 2006 SLK280). It is plastic, not metal, but fits enough to do the job. It was Pennzoil branded, part #19903 and was $5.99. Probably not as good and the MB part but thought some of you would want to know of this cheaper option.

My 2006 MB's don't really need it as the oil filter cap is not recessed at all so I usually use the plier-type universal wrench that I have (Fram branded, bought from Walmart)

anyone know where to get one online?

I'm in Australia and tried to change my oil on the weekend but got stock when trying to undo the filter!

P.S car is a 1998 W210 E320 with the V6 engine...
