2001 E320cdi V's E220cdi
Hi all,I am new to this site and looking to buy my first MB.
I am looking for some advice on which to buy.
I have seen a 1 owner, chauffer driven 2001 E320cdi elegance with the most comprehensive MB service history you can imagine, a really nice car in black. But with almost 300,000 miles on the clock.
The other vehicle is a 2001 E220cdi Avantgarde, two owner car with 80,000 miles, and a good service history. This car is £1,000stg more expensive.
I am looking forward to hearing what you experts have to say.
Thanks.

Impossible to decide!
The 220CDI is a fine engine vs the 320CDI which really is the summum of W210 Diesel power.
80,000 miles in 10 years is VERY low for a diesel. It has probably only had a few oil changes and brakes and tyres to pass MOT. If you start driving this car for daily use you'll probably run into having to replace parts on a regular basis.
300,000 miles is a lot, but with a great service history it's a good bet all the expensive parts that come up already have been replaced. You should be able to see if things as shocks, maybe the headgasket, various (subframe)bushings, engine mounts, exhaust, maybe some components like MAF or injectors etc. etc. have been done.
Also check for hidden rust on the bodywork. You're from Ireland, a wet country like mine and, regardless of mileage, rust can be a real PITA after 10 years on these cars. Check all wheelwells, all doors (especially the bottom and corners), the rear trunk lid and inside the hood and it's edges...
If the 320CDI is a 2001 elegance it's probably a so called 'elegance select' package like on my car. They did this the last two production years to keep buyers interested, it's packed with Xenons, Comand, parktronic, memory seats, moonroof etc. The suspension is great for smooth driving and if you have a lot of speedbumps in your area.
The 220CDI avantgarde has the sports suspension which is better at handling high-speed corners on the freeway, but not really the right engine lol!

Out Of Control!!

I think that if I were Irish and looking for a Pub car I would pass on the high mileage in line six cylinder and opt for the lower mileage four cylinder, 240000 mile difference is just to much for me regardless of service records. I would get better mileage and a vehicle that is far easier to service than a six. Good luck with what ever you choose!!
