Difficulty removing key from ignition.

I recently purchased a 98' e320 sedan and when i turn the car off after driving it the key is sometimes difficult to remove. It goes in and starts the car fine its just when i park it and am ready to take it out i have an issue. I've notice a little chip on the edge where the red infrared sensor thing is could this be the issue? I am trying to avoid buying a brand new key for 300 dollars. It's not a huge issue but i hope it doesn't get progressively worse to where i'm stuck in some parking lot for an hour trying to wiggle the key out.

If more than one key was given when you bought it, you should try it and see if it makes any difference.

Personally, I think you should have the second key made regardless. It will save you time/money in the long run, and if one key fails you can use the other for your car.

I see online I can purchase just the shell for like 30 bucks. Does anyone know if this includes the infrared plastic thing on the top, I can't tell from the picture. I'd rather try this first than spend all that money on a key through dealer.

Yea all the normal things. It's almost like there's a small learning curve to removing the key. Would a chip on that infrared sensor on the key cause it to get stuck in the ignition? It looks like the previous owner dropped it and a small chunk fell off.

I just can't seem to get used to the need to take my foot off the brake before I pull on the key in my wife's car. Maybe the device that locks the key in with the brake pushed has become defective. Try pulling up slightly on the brake pedal with your foot to see if that releases the key.

Worth checking the gear lever is in park snugly. On two occasions my key would not release because it wasn't quite "home".
