Coil Spring Mount

I have a 97 E320 that has been "clunking" on the right front side. While having new shocks and bushings installed, my mechanic discovered that the upper front coil spring mount has pulled away from the body. Apparently a weld broke. I called the local dealer and the service person finished my sentence while I described the problem. It is apparently not an uncommon problem. Does anyone have any insight?

PMC,

It's a defect that has been discussed around the boards before. I think there may be a recall or a TSB regarding it. From what I recall, it's basically a bad sealing job that allows water to get in there and deteriorate the cap mount. Do a search on these boards and you'll probably find more info than you want!

Unhappy Coil Spring Mount Problem

Hi,

I have a 97 E420 with 98,000 mi and the exact same thing just happened to my car. The upper front coil spring mount has pulled away from the body from the welding point and results in a clunking noise.

Can someone let me know for sure if there is a recall on this problem?

I was quoted $800 to fix this problem by a private mechanic, is this a reasonable price?
I was told the whole inner housing need to be replaced as they don't just sell the coil spring mount and its an 8 hr job.

Anyone that have the same problem please share your experience.

Thanks

ED

I had mine fixed for $309 at the dealership. The mechanic said that the problem was not as bad as others have been. Unfortunately, I could not determine if it is a recall item. The problem is not an infrequent one.

It's discussed as being:

023411 Check and Repair both seam sealer on front spring support.

From the thread it looks like at affects 96/97 through 00 models.

Hope it helps.
