Wagon with a surprise!

I've been tackling rust on my own 320CDI lately.
Today we took a look at my bro-in-law's 320CDI wagon, but this REALLY isn't funny anymore. Turns out the entire lower rear section is rotten...

Inlaws' 320CDI avantgarde wagon, looks good on the outside:

We decided to remove the rear bumper to get a better look at this spot:

Upon removing the trunk lining to get to the bumper bolts we found this:

We were actually looking into the bumper from the inside!

The right rear section was even filled with water:

We just stopped at this point as we were completely stumped and it was getting dark soon. This is going to require some extensive cutting out- and welding in new sheet metal parts. Tomorrow we're going to remove the rear bumper and see what more we'll find...

Looks like you've had a leak in there for some time unnoticed, which caused the damage

This looks better than mine!! Lifted the spare wheel and found daylight about a foot square. Found similar on other side. Patched it at the moment to stop gas coming in but need to find time to cut it all out.

Use a paint product called POR-15 to convert the rust to carbon black. It will stop the spread of rust. You can get it from automotive resto houses.

My inlaws took it to the MB specialist they purchased the car from 1.5 years ago and they agreed that this is all very bad. They offered to cut & weld in new OEM bodywork replacement panels sharing the cost 50/50

That is good news that the dealer is stepping up. Would not happen in Canada or the USA. glad to hear they will do it right. I love the wagon body design from this model year the best so far. The sedan is more plain looking from the rear and resembles the Ford taurus from the same time period. I just did the command install with Steve K's help from your part of the world. Also wired it for multicontour heated and ventilated seats. i have no rust issues at present and would wish to keep this one long term as well. Best wishes on the repair. Grab some pics of the work and post.
cheers
Eric
