e320 cargo carrier

I need to buy a roof top cargo carrier for a 1999 E320 Wagon. The wagon has rails, but no crossbars. I'm looking at the carrier sold through MB, but I'm getting unclear information from several dealers and MBUSA. One dealer says I don't need the crossbars, one says I need the crossbars, and MBUSA says I probably need them, but they MAY not be necessary. I don't think any of them really know for sure.

So, are there any other E320 wagon owners out there with the factory carrier who can tell me if the carrier will mount to the roof without the crossbars?

Also, are there any owners out there who are using and can recommend another brand of carrier? I'm just looking to carry extra luggage and stuff (not skis or bikes).

Thanks!

Go with Thule or Yakima- MB not much help

My 98 wagon has the factory rack and went thru the same who's on first routine at the dealer to find out the rack options. It looks like the factory options are made by a third party anyway and the cost is excessive. I suggest that you go with Thule or Yakima- you can get a set of 2 load bars plus 4 mounts to attach the bars to your factory rack for like $130. A cargo box is something like $250- $350. Plus then you'll have all the options available if you later decide you want to carry a bike, canoe, etc... Both have good websites with fit guides to show you what racks will work with your car.

I have had the yakima system for over 17 years and love it. I use it for bikes, skis, snowboards, surfboards as well as cargo (the cargo basket is very nice, it is expandable...see their web site). Just happened to have my camera out to take a couple of pics. These were purchased a couple of years ago.
