Will not run...PLEASE HELP!
99 Mercedes E-320 have had a problem with the vehicle intermittently shutting off, this has happened a few times after being driven for awhile. I thought this was the common Crankshaft Position sensor and replaced but with no luck, then the Mass Air Flow Sensor, then replaced fuel filter and drained tank and put new gas in...AS of now car will crank try to run for a split second then die, however, if I spray carb cleaner down the intake tract, it will run pretty consistently and shut off when I stop spraying etc...I have a fuel pressure gauge hooked up to the fuel rail and have 58 psi....any takers?? Thanks for the help
Some suggestions -
Throttle position sensor. Was the idle unsteady in the past?
Plugged PCV lines - check oil fill cap for 'gook' on under side. Be careful inspecting the lines as they will break easily when older. Best to have replacements before working on old ones.
Do the cats rattle when hit with, say, a rubber mallet? Excessive back pressure will cause stalling. Back pressure can be tested for.
Just an FYI - Car will run fine without MAF. But it will run rich and damage the catalytic convertors.
These are all potential problems for an older, high mileage MB.

My 2000 Clk did this. Try lifting up gently on the key while starting it. My problem went away when i lightened up the load with the Benz key and one house key only on the key ring. Try lifting up on key during start and see if the fixes this engine die right after start. Once in the past year my car continually died right after start up, just lifted the key up while turning and it no longer died (that was 6 months ago).
