Has anyone seen this symptom?

2002 E320 4Matic Wagon - 140,000 milies currently.

I was driving highway yesterday at noon and noticed a noise coming from passenger-side real tires. It was like something is hitting inside of rear fender, around tires. A minute later, the noise was gone after I saw finger size (rubber?) or something fell off.

When I was off and was driving home from work then Fuel-Low light started to BLINKING and then few minutes later, 'Check Engine' light came on. (See Picture)

Has anyone seen this symptom and possible fixing instruction?
Thanks,

Have you inspected around the gas cap area? Alerts suggest a possible fuel leak.

The charcoal canister is in the fenderwell on that side behind the bumper, but that's about it.

Gas cap is locked and tightly closed and I don't see any fuel overflow around gas cap area. hmmm...

I noticed once when the gas cap broke. But it was constant 'Check Engine' light on. For this time, the 'low fuel' light is blinking.

A blinking light means a loose cap or, if retightening the cap doesn't help, a fuel leak. If the leak is serious enough, the CEL will also come on.

If the light is still blinking and the CEL is on, it's probably a good idea to have someone look at the car.
