Cleaned my EGR traject; what a mess!!!
This week I finally grew tired of the black smoke, in warm weather my car really had a 'James Bond' effect on the drivers behind me. Warm weather means less oxigen in the same volume of air, combined with a glogged intake this is giving uncombusted Diesel fumes under load. Videoclip of the smoke under accelleration
I had my EGR operation disabled a few months ago but never cleaned out the system.
The needed gaskets and o-rings:
Engine without covering:
EGR heat-exchanger and Inlet manifold removed: (was a b!tch btw)
The slugde (oil and sooth-goop) after 280.000km:
Connection of EGR-valve on Inlet Manifold:
Parts of the inlet had a 25% to 33% decrease in diameter!
Causing not enough oxigen getting in under load:

Everything cleaned up, new gasket and ready for the car:
I blocked off the exhaust channel to the EGR using a piece of sheetmetal between the connection of the EGR heat-exchanger. I confirmed the EGR valve body is closed (since it's not operated anymore) and removed the vacuum-lines and transducer.
Upon first run I had a constant thick white smoke until the engine got to operating temperature. I then stepped on it on the highway for many KM's, made alot of kick-down starts and the smoke is gone! The car will pass annual emissions since they only measure sooth output overhere. The sooth is gone, only NOX is higher with the EGR gone...

Funny seeing this. I just read a story about witches to my daughter and then came back to the forum and found your post. In the storybook it said witches originated in Norway and that there are many witches living throughout the Nordic countries today. I know, a crazy connection but i thought it was cute. She is only 8. Great write up by the way and thanks for the pics.
