The "W" is for Winter, and the "S" is for Summer. Basically, in the "W"mode, the car will start off in 2nd gear in order to keep from breaking traction on snowy/icy surfaces. Either way, the W210 is not a good bet in the snow unless equipped with 4Matic.

'W'inter/'W'et and 'S'tandard - When switched to 'W' the car starts in 2nd gear to increase traction on slippery surfaces.

However, if the put the transmission selector in '1' (First gear) or press the accelerator all the way (kick-down) the 'W' position will be overridden.
