Rebasing the city lights...

Has anyone rebased their headlamps to replace the H6 sockets to something more common like an 1156 type bulb. I had in mind using the socket base from an Audi headlamp front turn signal socket and fitting it to where the H6 socket is with the help of a Dremel ofcourse.

Keep in mind there is a built in INLINE fuse deep in the light housing itself, so you have to rebase to the same fuse specs, which are pretty low.

just a thought.

Aside from the alleged hidden fuse, you will need a socket that will place the new bulb as deep into the high beam/city light housing to ensure that the light will reflect throughout the inside evenly.

I never have seen an exploded view of the headlight unit, but in a previous post, I experimented with a small 20 watt, marine, halogen bulb. The light output outside of the housing was much brighter than the H6, but when inside, no perceivable difference was seen from the front of the car. Also, increased heat emission made a funny smell quickly. I turned everything off, then put it all back in stock form.

Also, the 1156 Audi base/socket is significantly larger in diameter than the H6 socket hole. You would then have to open up the hole larger. Also, I am not sure how clearance you will have between a larger 1156 bulb and the H7 high beam bulb.

If you make this all work, please post pictures.
