Grinding Noise When Braking

I hear a grinding noise when I'm braking and almost at a complete stop. Like if I brake while keeping the pedal in the same position, it starts making a grinding noise when I'm almost at a full stop. Its fine at all other times. Any ideas?

Brakes worn out? One of the pad bases are grinding on the disc… sounds like to me. I have seen cars that do not make the sound when trying to stop, but when barely moving make a horrible grinding sound. Simply one worn out pad. But all need to be replaced. Check that first...

Good advice.

BTW, all eight brake pads are supposed to be checked for thickness on every proper B service.

Try powerwashing the wheels, get the power spray onto the calipers and rotors, do this when they are not too hot.

Brakes are not worn out, you would have a sensor go off first.

Actually the sensor is not true. I have seen many a left hand brake worn down to the metal, while the right hand (the side the sensors are on) are not worn the same. This can easily happen if you have a defective pad, sticking piston or bad master valve. There is only a sensor on one wheel front and one wheel back.

However, the suggestion of a bad dust build up (or road grime) , and cleaning well with a strong spray wash is a good one too.

same sound on 2000 e320 4 matic wagon

I experienced the same thing. Brakes were fine.
Turns out it was the front axel. A rubber seal had deteriorated and caused axle problem. $700 replacement at indie shop
