'96+ E-Class trunk
Newbie here. . .
On the '96+ E-Classes, does the trunk pop-open automatically (i.e. press the trunk release switch, the trunk "pops" open for you without having to lift it) on all of them, or is that only on the '01+?

Adjust it
It is suposed to spring open. If your trunk lid lock pops but the lid doesn't swing open then the tention on the hinge is too loose. Take out the carpeted covers from around the trunk hinge and see if the tentioning rod can be adjusted to add more spring in the lid.
The W210 trunk fits all models from 96-2002. The only thing that changes is the taillight fitment. As for the 96-99 auto trunk openning, all you have to do is hit the unlock button on your key/transmitter 2 times really quickly and the trunk will pop open. Sometimes the it the car does not register the second hit on the key so I do it 3 times quickly and it works!

I don't believe this is correct. The locks are different sizes for different years. The locking mechanism also works differently. Also, 1998 and newer models use SmartKey, with has a separate trunk button the remote... only requires one press.

I don't think that he is asking how to unlock the trunk but if it swings open all of the way after it is opened. Can't that be adjusted to pop open faster at the hinges? My 96 trunk flys open all of the way when I hit my remote twice.

Since moving the springs on both sides one set of holes can cause a big change, one can move only one spring at a time for finer adjustment.
