Fleece oil filter?

I have a '98 E240 and am having trouble finding a part number for the oil filter. I'll change the oil myself with mobil 1 0w-50 so i'm guessing I need a fleece oil filter but i'm not 100% sure. Everything I find about these is 2002 onwards, nothing on the earlier cars. I have done a search on here and have spent the last half hour on google but my internet skills are obviously not that good because it seems like a simple thing. I think i've found the right filter on ebay but am a little hesitant to buy it without checking the model numbers etc...

1. Everything I find is suggesting I use mobil 1 (it's what has been used in the car for the last 10 years) so should I also use a fleece oil filter with this or is paper ok?

2. Does anyone have a model number for either of these filters?

3. Does a 98 E240 use the same filter as the newer cars (C240 etc...)?

Thank you.

Everything depends on whether you choose to use or ignore the car's FSS for oil changes. Well described in the owners manual but the important points are 1) that you use a fully synthetic oil meeting MB spec 229.3 or 229.5. One such oil widely available in the US is Mobil 1 Synthetic 0W-40 European Car Formula and 2) that you use a polyester media filter (sometimes called 'fleece'). If you meet those two requirements, reset the FSS to 10K and wait until the car's computer tells you it is time to change the oil and filter. Depending the conditions you may go from about 12K-18K between changes. However, if you drive very little then the 1 year time requirement overrides the mileage.

If you do not wish to use the FSS (not sure why you wouldn't), you can use a good quality oil and a paper media filter and change at 7.5K or sooner.

The OEM filter supplied at the dealer is a Mann HU7185X but has the MB logo on the end. Other sources (cheaper) include online retailers like autohausaz, etc. I believe some major filter cos. such as Fram, etc now have a polyester filter for MB.

Last time I bought one at dealer MB part no. was 000-180-26-09. It's been a few years so maybe there is a newer number.

I searched for that part number, found my model and year mentioned in several places so it's definitely the one i'm after. I just didn't want to order a filter online, wait forever and then have a paper one turn up. Buying local is just too expensive. 0w-50 was a typo, I meant 40

Thank you.

Thanks but they won't post outside the US and i'm in Australia.

It's all good, I found some on Ebay. 10 for $160 inc postage. I might keep 3 or 4 and list the rest for $20-$25ea, still cheaper than we can get them here.

heck, amazon has these quite inexpensive, as well....but I have to pay sales tax on top of it. still, quite competitive.
